Third Sundays of the Month
5:00 pm
in the Church
Beginning in October and going throughout the coming program year, the 5 pm Contemplative Worship Service, which will be held on the 3rd Sunday of each month, will encompass passages from Philip Newell’s The Book of Creation: An Introduction to Celtic Spirituality plus prayers and chants from Newell’s Sounds of the Eternal: A Celtic Psalter.
Celtic Christians regarded the Bible as the “little book” and creation as the “big book”. In this tradition, Newell takes passages from Genesis and weaves them with early Celtic writing as well as passages from the New Testament to introduce us to a way of thinking about creation that makes the heart quicken and bring home our relationship to God, for creation is on-going.
Our order of service will include a meditative prelude -- often played on indigenous instruments, an opening prayer, several readings, chants, a time of reflection, and a closing prayer. One’s time of reflection can be used for listening for what God has to say or for meditating on the reading for the day. Just being present in the moment offers us a time of renewal. Each service is open to all, whether or not you have read these texts or attended prior services. Come, spend time with us as we explore this ancient wisdom.
